International Delights- Hae Woon Dae Korean BBQ

Buford Highway, in Atlanta, holds an untold bounty of multicultural culinary delights. But navigating  it can be a bit overwhelming and down right scary if of you don't have a good guide to help you maneuver it's long expnase and endless sea of bizarre looking strip malls. After deciding to do a better job of exploring all of the cultural culinary delights available in the area we decided to start with Keoran BBQ. It's Summer and nothing says summer like BBQ!

Hae Woon Dae is a quaint little restaurant tucked away in a shopping plaza right off I-285 sharing a parking lot with an adult movie theater and a strip club. Yes, you heard it correctly. But, don't let this deter you one bit. It adds to the charm. Once inside you have the option of a table in the main dining room or my personal favorite, the private dinning rooms that seat larger groups. This is a great place to take a group of friends and pass around food and drink family style. You get your own personal coal burners built right into the center of  your table so you can watch and smell your food being cooked while you enjoy the company of friends.

What we ate...and drank
  1. Seafood Pancake Appetizer (pajeon) -  This pancake is made from a batter of rice flour, eggs a generous helping of green onions,  clams, mussels, oysters, shrimp and other seafood are added. Add a soy sauced based dippig sauce and you are left a tasty and very satisfying start to dinner.
  2. Charbroiled Tender Beef and Chicken Marinated in Korean sauce -the meats were marinated in a Korean sauce and cooked at the table over a coal grill. The meat was flavorful, tender and delicious!
  3. Side Dishes (banchan) – Along with you your meat choice come a wide variety of small side dishes to be shared by the table. You don't have to order these, they just bring out whatever they are making that day. They brought kimchi, and a wide variety of, steamed, marinated or stir fried vegetables. Some were hard to identify but all of them were delicious.Who cares what kind of vegetable it is if it's yummy.
  4. Chicken Fried Rice- The fried rice was great! Nothing fancy about it, we just wanted a little more starch to share and who doesn't like fried rice.
  5. Hite - This is the top selling beer in Korea. It is light, golden and sweet. It tastes like a Budweiser. Very refreshing! Not to mention I just like to say HITE!!!
  6. Jinro Plum Wine- Made from green plum extract. Unlike most plum wines that are typically super sweet, this one had a subtle sweetness and light plum flavor. Sweet with a bit of a kick.

All in all we had a great meal and will definitely go back to try some different menu items. Apparently the beef tongue is to die for (not my cup of tea). The food was flavorful and well cooked and if you love garlic this is definitely your spot. Give it a try, it's a great experience.
